Case 220. CMV villitis (25 y-o F)
Placental tissue artifically aborted at the 20th week of gestation, accompanying high CMV antibody titer in mother and a microcephalic baby (465 g)
Key words : cytomegalovirus, villitis, microcephalus
Cytomegalic inclusion bodies are seen in the nuclei of Hofbauer cells in the placental villi (HE). Fetal infection of CMV was confirmed by autopsy. In situ hybridization histochemistry for DNA of CMV reveals positive signals in the inclusion bodies.
The cytoplasmic granular inclusions are immunoreactive for Leu M1 (CD15). Nuclear inclusions are negative.
