Case 157. Staphylococcal impetigo contagiosum (23 y-o F)
Skin biopsy of multiple erosive pustules formed on the face, trunk and arms
Key words : Staphylococcus aureus, impetigo contagiosum
Fibrinopurulent exudation on the ulcerated epidermis is observed, being consistent with ruptured pustule (HE, low power).   Multiple coccal colonies are observed on the surface of the exudate (HE, high power).
The coccal colonies in the exudate are Gram-positive, indicating infection of Staphylococcus aureus.   Reference case 157A
Gross appearance of impetigo contagiosum (6 y-o F). Multiple red papules with small pustules in the center are observed on the hip skin. The lesions are contagious through contact transmission.
