The proximal renal tubules are necrotic, and also show hyaline droplet degeneration (HE). The disease is called hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), or Korean hemorrhagic fever.   Hanta viral antigen in macrophages in bone marrow
Viral antigen is proven mainly in the epithelial cells and macrophages (colloidal gold method). HFRS is now endemic in China with a mortality rate of 10%. Hemorrhage in the renal medulla, anterior pituitary, skin and left atrium is characteristic.
