Case 92. VZV pneumonia (60 y-o M)
    Fatal pneumonia, in association with bilateral herpes zoster, in a lymphoma patient after chemotherapy

Extensive interstitial and necrotizing pneumonia, showing marked septal thickening and reactive swelling of pneumocytes (HE, low power).   Nuclear inclusions are mainly seen in the septal cells and endothelial cells and some in alveolar cells (HE, high power).
GP-1 antigen of VZV, recognized by a monoclonal antibody, is expressed on the plasma membranes of the infected cells in the thickened septa (immunostaining). Nuclear inclusions are not stained with this antibody.
