Case 82. Myospherulosis (43 y-o M)
Paranasal lavage preparation in case of chronic sinusitis
Key words : myospherulosis, false mycosis
Large sporangium-like structures containing endospore-like globules are observed in the background of neutrophilic infiltration (Papanicolaou). The sporangium-like structure with globular internal substances allegedly represents a macrophage phagocytizing lysed red blood cells (Papanicolaou, high power).
Grocott stain is negative in the sporangium-like structure. PAS is also negative. This "false mycosis" should be distinguished from true mycosis.
